Outstanding Russian artist, genre and portrait painter, master of etching. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1863 to 1866. Since 1872 - a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions. The last time he participated in the ‘Itinerant’ in 1918. From 1873 - Academician. From 1894 to 1916. - Professor-head of the genre workshop at the Academy of Arts.
