Nesterov Mikhail Vasilyevich

1862—1942

Outstanding Russian artist. A student of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1877 to 1880. He studied under V. G. Perov, E. S. Sorokin, I. M. Pryanishnikov and A. K. Savrasov. He was a pupil of the Academy of Arts. From 1889 - an exhibitor, and from 1896 - a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions. The last time he exhibited his paintings at the Itinerant in 1901. The main attention in his paintings after graduation tried to focus on the transfer of lyrical experiences of a man surrounded by a simple northern Russian landscape. In 1898 - academician, from 1910 - full member of the Academy of Arts. During the years of Soviet power he became famous as one of the leading masters of realistic portraiture (portraits of I. P. Pavlov, V. I. Mukhina, I. D. Shadra and others). In 1942 the artist was awarded the title of Honoured Art Worker of the RSFSR. He left behind a book: "Long ago days. Meetings and memories" (1941).
